GFCI vs. AFCI Outlets: What Do You Need?

outlet-on-wall-with-cord-plugged-inHow do the outlets in your home look? Do they appear clean and operate well, providing the power you need? Or do you have more than one outlet with burn marks and that don’t like to respond regularly?

Having the right outlets in the right areas of your home is an important requirement. If you didn’t know that there was more than one type of outlet or aren’t sure which one goes where, our electricians in Coeur d’Alene can help. We can check on the electrical outlets and other systems in your home and will make sure that any faulty outlets are replaced with the right ones.

What Are the Different Outlets You Should Know?

Figuring out the outlets in your home isn’t just a matter of going to the store and finding one that will look nice on your wall. The room you need the outlet for is actually going to define what type of outlet you need. Here are the types of outlets you should know about and why:

  1. Ground Fault Circut Interrupter (GFCI) Outlet: GFCI outlets are highly important to your home. This is because the function of this outlet is to stop electrical surges from causing damage when the current flows the wrong way. This outlet is best for areas of your home that encounter high levels of moisture and humidity such as the bathroom, kitchen, or even your laundry room. A GFCI outlet is going to keep you safe in the event that an electrical appliance or outlet meets too much moisture (e.g. a hairdryer gets dropped into the sink or water is splashed on the outlet).
  2. Arc Fault Circut Interrupter (AFCI) Outlet: An AFCI outlet isn’t going to be very helpful in your bathroom, but it will be a great help in living rooms, bedrooms, and other parts of the house that stay dry. The purpose of this type of outlet is going to be to monitor the flow of electricity in your system and detect any malfunction. If the outlet picks up on an electrical malfunction, the AFCI outlet is going to prevent dangers like electrical fires.
