Common Reasons for Furnace Trouble

As the weather cools to the point that daily use of a heater is absolutely a necessity, your furnace is under a lot of stress. Its wear and tear is increased during the winter, and the chance of a serious problem happening goes up considerably. Even if you’ve kept up on professional furnace maintenance, you should stay on top of any repair issues that may arise. Keep reading to learn about some of the most common problems furnaces run into.

Faulty Ignition

If you are like the many homeowners who utilize a gas-powered furnace, then your heating system relies on some kind of ignition device to start up. This may be a standing pilot light—which is common among older systems—an intermittent electric system, or a heating element.

If your ignition system fails, then the furnace won’t be able to ignite the burner assemble in order to supply heat. Usually, the first sign of an ignition problem is if the furnace fails to start all together. This can be an extremely frustrating issue for you, but the good news is that our repair professionals can have it fixed relatively quickly.

Air Handler Failure

Your furnace’s air handler is the component of your heating system that is tasked with circulating air throughout the system during its operation. In order to compensate for the friction that is generated during operation, the air handler motor is outfitted with oiled bearings, which wear down over time and eventually require replacement.

You’ll notice when the bearing are worn down, because you’ll hear a loud grinding noise when your system is running. If you do not replace these bearings when you should, then the friction will continue to mount until the air handler motor burns itself out. It’s imperative that you call for repairs as soon as you hear this noise to prevent further damage.
