The Importance of Having the Right Outlets

outlet-on-wall-with-cord-plugged-inWhen you think about your electrical systems, your mind probably hops to wires and connections and other things. You may only consider your electrical outlets when considering whether or not they are usable. But did you know that your electrical outlets can be a big factor in how safe and efficient your home is? It might sound odd, but it’s true!

Electricians in Deer Park, WA know the importance of having the right outlets in the right areas of your home. It’s about a lot more than just what looks good on your wall. Learn more below and reach out to our team for help when getting your outlets in order.

The Two Key Types of Outlets

Ever gone to the store to get a new outlet? Maybe your old one has burn marks or you are simply on the hunt for something that doesn’t clash with the new wall paint as much. If you’ve ever gone on the hunt for a new outlet, there is a chance that you’ve encountered the different types that you need to choose from. If you didn’t know what the difference between them was, let us give you a quick overview:

  • AFCI Outlets: Arc fault circuit interrupters are outlets that you can use in almost any room in the house. Their purpose is to help protect your home from electrical threats, specifically to prevent electrical fires. AFCI outlets can be used in bedrooms, living rooms, and other areas of the house.
  • GFCI Outlets: Ground fault circuit interrupters are the other type of outlet that you will absolutely need in your home. Visually, the two may look the same but there is a big difference between them. Your GFCI outlet is specifically for areas of your home that see a lot of moisture or humidity (bathrooms, laundry room, the kitchen, or even outdoor spaces.) GFCI outlets shut down the flow of electricity is they detect a change in the amount flowing in and out of a circuit to help prevent the risk of electrocution.

Why Knowing the Difference Is Important

As you have likely guessed, the reason that we want you to know about these outlets is for the safety of your home and everyone in it. If you have an older home with outdated outlets, they may not offer the same level of protection as these outlets do. That is why it is good to reach out to an electrician to have your electrical system, which includes your outlets, checked and, if needed, updated.
