Ductless System FAQ: Your Biggest Questions, Answered

If you don’t already know, there are numerous benefits to having a ductless mini-split system installed in your home, both for cooling as well as for heating. We’d like to address some of the common questions that homeowners often have about this technology, which has become increasingly popular in recent years. Keep reading for answers to your burning questions.

Q: Is Professional Installation Required?

A: Yes. The complexity of installation for a ductless system is not quite as laborious as installing a traditional central air conditioning system, however it’s significantly more involved than that of a window unit.

Sure, you can find guides online about how to do the work on your own, but we strongly recommend against that. A poorly installed ductless system can make the manufacturer’s warranty null and void, not to mention your system may not work as efficiently or as effectively as it would have otherwise.

Q: Does Installation Require Any Demolition?

A: Not at all! To connect each of the air handlers in different rooms to the outdoor unit requires nothing more than a small hole drilled through the wall behind each air handler to allow for the refrigerant line and power line. This hole is typically only 3 inches or less in diameter.

Q: How Much Heating and Cooling Power Do I Need from My Ductless System?

A: This will depend on your specific home, the number of air handlers you have installed, and the square footage you want to be conditioned. Air handlers do condition a larger area than window AC units, and therefore have higher BTU (British Thermal Units) requirements. Our professionals will help you figure out the power of the unit you need so that it best matches your comfort requirements.
