Repair or Replace: Which Is Best for Your Air Conditioner?

When your older air conditioner struggles to run, you are faced with a few tough decisions. The biggest question of all is tough to answer without the proper expertise: Is it worth it to repair the air conditioning system, or is it more cost-effective to invest in a replacement? We’ve put together a guide to when replacement may be the best option, but we always recommend that you consult with a local technician first.

When Replacement Is a Better Choice

There are times when replacement is the best solution to your AC troubles, and many times when it is the only option. But this does not have to be a bad thing. Today’s AC systems are more efficient than ever before, and you can expect to save quite a bit on your monthly bills. Here’s how to tell that it might be time for an upgrade.

  • The air conditioner breaks down frequently.
  • The repair costs several hundred dollars, or anywhere around half the total cost of a new system.
  • The replacement part you need is no longer manufactured. Incompatible parts can lead to further issues within the system.
  • The AC system is over 10 years old. In this case, it’s likely that a costly repair won’t hold up, and replacement may be a more efficient option.

When a Repair Will Do

A quality technician will look out for your best interest when recommending repairs or a replacement system. Even some ten year-old systems can be easily repaired, while some five year-old systems fail prematurely (often because they were not professionally installed). Your best bet is to contact a technician for advice, and if you are told that a repair is a better option, it’s probably true. If the price quoted sounds extreme, however, you may want to seek a second opinion.
