What to Expect During Generator Maintenance

Your generator is not likely an appliance you give much thought to until you need it. However, it’s absolutely vital that you schedule routine maintenance for this device. After all, by not ensuring that your generator is operating at its intended capacity you may be risking system shutdown when it comes time for you to use it.

Think of routine preventive maintenance like an insurance policy for your generator! While you may think you are capable of performing the following maintenance tasks on your own, it’s best to have a trained professional to care for your system. But what do these professionals actually do during generator maintenance?

Change Oil: Most generators rely on natural gas to run. However, whatever fuel source you use, your generator has a motor that requires oil in order to operate. So, if you had to use your generator prior to your maintenance appointment, then your electrician will likely need to change the oil. It’s wise to change the oil every few months regardless of use.

Refuel the Unit: As mentioned above, most of these units run on gas. If this is the case, then refueling is unnecessary as the gas is piped in from a municipal source. However, if your generator runs on propane or diesel, then the fuel may become stale over time, requiring that the system be refueled.

Check Electrical Components: Technicians will need to check that the generator’s connection to your home’s electrical system for damage or corrosion. They’ll also ensure that everything is tightly fitting and no small problems exist that need to be taken care of.

Replace the Air Filter: If your generator is used, then the air filter can get congested thanks to dirt, dust, and other debris. Even if your generator only ran for a short time last season, having your air filter checked is a good idea.

Change out Old Spark Plugs: It’s recommended that you have spark plugs replaced every 3 years or so to keep your generator running at its best. During your maintenance appointment, the technicians will check to see if your spark plugs should be swapped out for new ones.
