All About Heat Pumps

Are you looking for the perfect home comfort system for a new home or to replace a broken down system? We may have the right choice for your new air conditioning and heating system. Heat pumps are becoming more and more popular in recent years, and we’ll tell you why in today’s guide.

Heat Pumps Heat and Cool with Refrigeration

Refrigeration is the process by which a central air conditioning system, car air conditioner, and refrigerator all work. “Cold” air is not exactly created during this process. Rather, heat is removed from a space. When a heat pump is in cooling mode, it works just like an air conditioner. Refrigerant travels from an indoor unit, where it absorbs heat from the air in the home, to an outdoor unit, where heat dissipates to the air around it, and the cycle continues until the process is complete.

A heat pump has additional valves that allow it to reverse direction, absorbing heat from the outdoors and releasing this heat into the home. This is effective throughout most of the year, and your technician will install an additional electric heat backup since heat absorption becomes difficult once temperatures approach freezing.

Heat Pumps Are Incredibly Efficient

One of the main reasons to choose a heat pump over a more conventional air conditioner or heater is the high level of efficiency for most of the year. If you choose a system with a high SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating, you can count on the lower operating costs through the summer (as long as you also schedule regular maintenance). Additionally, because it is easier to move heat than it is to generate heat, heat pumps use a lot less energy than traditional heating systems.

Ductless Heat Pumps and Geothermal Heat Pumps Are Also Available

You can get a heat pump for your home even if you don’t have any ducts in place. Ductless mini split heat pumps are just as effective as ducted systems. And for those with ducts, you have additional energy-saving options, including geothermal heat pumps that use the earth’s energy as a source of heat.
